Flutter-By

The Jamestown Audubon Center holds a "Butterfly Room" event at the end of every summer. Monarch butterflies are tagged and released for their annual migration to Mexico, and a room is set up with hundreds of butterflies, ready for release.

This is such a wonderful event, because the Audubon is excellent with educational material for preschoolers. They had several tubs filled with milkweed, and caterpillars at various stages of development. Magnifying glasses were provided, and our little Mr. Scientist loved watching the caterpillars munch on leaves.

A holding area was also set up, so children could hold the butterflies in a supervised area. I loved watching my boys hold their butterflies, while talking to them gently.

After watching a butterfly tagging demonstration, we headed out to visit the rest of the center.

We didn't end up on any hiking trails due to the rain, but we did check out the Discovery Room. Matt fell in love with a deer puppet and was so upset to leave his new "friend."

He was hopping with glee to discover some real deer were visiting our backyard when we got home.
