We took Matthew ice skating on July 5th, and it was a definite success! He was not able to stand by himself on the ice (we didn't expect that would happen since he is 2 1/2), but was able to gain his balance on the floor and we soon had to admonish him for running in ice skates. We went around the rink time and time again, until we were all permanently bent at a 90 degree angle.
Next winter sport to try: skiing!
