First Day of School 2012

September 5 was the first day of school. One happy first grader and one extremely excited Kindergartener were ready to head back into the classroom.

I did make one major change this year, and it was definitely for the better. I have decided to drive the boys to school, rather than having them take the school bus. This was the best decision I ever made - the school bus arrives at 8:00am and doesn't return until 4:00pm. By contrast, I can leave our house at 8:40am and have the boys home by 3:30pm - giving us an extra hour to the day. This makes a huge difference with after school activities!

Another change is that Nolan is now picking out his own clothes. He has a penchant for sweater vests.

It felt so strange to take both boys to school and to leave them there all day long. Matt, of course, was in full-day school last year. This year, I am sending my baby - my baby - to spend all day in class.

He was a little nervous to head into the school, but he went to Pre-K in the same building, so he knew his way around.

They were both excited and happy when I picked them up from school - they loved their teachers, the classrooms, and all of the new school supplies. The 2012 - 2013 school year is off to a great start!

Poor Casey Dog does miss his boys. He was happy to have them home again at the end of the day!

Twas the Night Before School (September 4, 2012)

I love Pinterest. I am not very clever at creating cute, fun activities for the kids I am very good at copying other people's ideas, though!

As a back-to-school treat, we had a glow-in-the-dark bath. The kids were thrilled!

The best thing is that the glow-bath only cost about $2 (two packets of glow sticks from the dollar store).

Yes, $2 was definitely worth the hour of happiness on the night before school!

September 1: Nolan's Fifth Birthday Party

We didn't have an elaborate party planned for Nolan's 5th Birthday, but we did invite over a few friends, opened up cans of silly string, and let the kids run around like crazy for a few hours.

Nolan had a great time. He loves superheroes, so we played "Spiderman tag" with the silly string.

He was happy to have his friends over and to simply have a happy day. He was smiling all day long.

I made some foam swords out of pool noodles (I wrapped the ends in Spiderman duct tape), and the boys really enjoyed playing with the "swords."

We did play a few organized games - a balloon stomp game and a water balloon toss game. The kids enjoyed these, but I think they liked running around with the foam swords the best.

Soon it was time for cake. I'm not sure how my little guy managed to grow to the ripe old age of FIVE.

He was pleased as punch to hear the Happy Birthday song in his honor, and happily blew out his candles.

He is a very lucky little boy and had several presents to open. His brother kept trying to "help" him open his gifts - Nolan didn't seem to mind as he was so very happy to see all of the neat new toys.

He had a great time, and we had a lovely Labor Day weekend. What a great way to end the summer!

Back to School Night: August 30, 2012

The end of August arrived with Back to School Night. We were able to go to the boys' school, meet their new teachers, and see their new classrooms. Nolan is still in the "Kindergarten House," shared by pre-K and Kindergarten students. He has a new classroom, and we met his teacher and teacher of the deaf (TOD) in the room. We picked up his FM system there, and Nolan got acquainted with some of the new toys in the room.

We headed over to the 1st-2nd grade house to visit Matt's new room. First and second graders are down the hall from the Kindergarten pod. The school is arranged so that the primary grades are "down" the ramps and the intermediate grades (3-5) are on the second floor of the school. Matt's classroom was colorful and had a lot of centers for math and reading activities.

The tables were laid out with their new reading workbooks and a packet to take home.

Matt was the most excited about a first grade rite of passage. Lockers. First graders get lockers in our elementary school (no, they are not locked). With our weather, this allows the children to store school supplies and winter coats/boots/hats with ease.

It still seems strange to me. When I grew up in California, students didn't get lockers until high school!

We left the school that night and the boys were very excited to start school on September 5!

California Vacation, Days 11 and 12

I don't have many pictures from our last day in California. We went to lunch at the California Pizza Kitchen, then walked on the beach with my parents. The boys found sea glass and had a great time running through the sand.

That evening, we went out to dinner at Yolanda's to celebrate Aunt M.E.'s birthday. It was great fun and we miss everyone so very much.

The next morning, we were up early to drive to Los Angeles, and we boarded our flight back home. The flight was smooth, the connection was fast, and we were in Buffalo by 10pm that evening. The kids didn't sleep on the way home, as they were still on California time. When we arrived in Jamestown at midnight, they were revved up and ready to go.

Fortunately, they settled and managed to eventually fall asleep!

California, we miss you!

Disneyland: California Vacation, Day 10

I love Disneyland. I don't particularly love heavy crowds and long lines, so I was thrilled to find out that the week of August 15th is the week before annual pass-holders can return to the parks. It is also the week after most kids in Southern California have returned to school.

Dennis's parents bought us tickets to get into the park, and we drove down to Anaheim on Thursday morning. There was absolutely no traffic on the way down.

We were parked and in Tomorrowland by 10:45am. We ate lunch early and waited at the Tomorrowland Terrace for my all-time favorite Disney show with kids: The Jedi Training Academy. The last time we were at Disneyland, Nolan was two years old and very shy, so not really able to participate. Matt did it and loved it, so we went for it again on this trip.

Nolan and Matt were chosen right away - their aunt made sure to create signs that read, "The Force is strong with my super ears," and "Pick or pick not, there is no try." Yes, she is amazing. Nolan was placed on stage right next to the Jedi Master.

Matt was a little further down the stage. The boys were in their element, and practiced their Jedi moves.

Darth Vader arrived on the scene and Matt bravely fought against the Dark Side.

Nolan absolutely loved fighting Darth Vader and fought with gusto.

He had a special part in the show, and was asked to use the Force to push back the storm troopers. He pushed them back with his hands, and the Jedi Master told him the Force was strong with him.

At the end of the show, the boys were dubbed "Padawans" and received their diplomas.

After the Jedi Training Academy, we walked over to the Matterhorn and got in line. The sun was rather bright and the day was hot, so Grandma and Grandpa took the boys to buy some hats while we waited in line. The line wasn't very long, and within 15-20 minutes we were at the front! The grandparents and boys arrived and we jumped into our bobsleds. The boys loved the ride - they aren't afraid of anything.

Since it was hot, we jumped in line for It's a Small World. The line for this ride moves very quickly and we were happily sitting in the air conditioning within a few minutes. The boys are really at a perfect age. They love all the rides - from the roller coasters to the kiddie rides. Disneyland is perfect for five and six year olds! After Small World, Aunt M.E. and I took the kids on the teacups. The rest of our party opted out of the spinning ride.

Once we were done with the teacups, we walked toward Frontierland and hopped on Thunder Mountain. Matt was absolutely thrilled!

After the "wildest ride in the wilderness," we walked over to New Orleans Square and rode Pirates of the Caribbean. Nolan was absolutely fascinated by the ride - he couldn't figure out how they made it look like nighttime. It was still rather hot, so we stopped for ice cream after that ride.

We discussed the Haunted Mansion. The boys hadn't been frightened by anything so far, so we asked them if they wanted to ride it. We called it the "Singing Ghost Ride," and told them that people liked to scream in the stretching room. The boys have seen the ride on their Disneyland Fun DVD, so they were game for it. Matt was a little more nervous than Nolan, so he rode with Dennis and me. He was absolutely fine throughout the ride, and was very impressed with how realistic the "ghosts" were.

We are always very honest about the rides and tell them everything is pretend. Matt and Nolan were both interested in how the special effects were produced, and we talked about projectors, glass, and mirrors. This really helps make the rides less frightening, at least for our kids.

We rode Splash Mountain next, which was Nolan's favorite ride, hands-down. He just loved it! I'm not a huge fan of water flume rides, but survived it and was glad we all did it together.

We had dinner at the Big Thunder Ranch BBQ place. The price was high, but the food was excellent. Ribs, chicken, sausages, corn, cornbread, and beans were served family style. They had little shows during dinner and the boys jumped up on the stage to dance.

The quiet sit-down dinner was wonderful for rejuvenating everyone. The sun started to dip, and the evening air was warm and comfortable. The evening parade was about to start, so Aunt M.E. and Uncle D. secured spots while we ran over to Star Tours. The new version of Star Tours is a lot of fun. C3PO drives the starspeeder, and the 3D effects really add a lot to the ride. I really loved zooming through the AT-AT's on Hoth. The boys were happily shouting throughout the ride.

We hopped off the ride just in time for the parade, and watched all of the floats go by. We all enjoyed the parade, then scooted onto Buzz Lightyear for a quick ride.

Our children decided they really preferred Uncle D. and Aunt M.E. to Mom and Dad. Apparently, they're just more fun.

We jumped in line for Space Mountain as the sun went down. This is my favorite ride, hands-down. I absolutely love it.

Matt and Nolan were excited by the idea of a roller coaster in space, and gladly hopped into the roller coaster cars. At not-quite five years old, Nolan loved the ride. Matt jumped off the roller coaster and declared, "That was really well done!" So kudos, Imagineers. My six year old heartily approves (and so does his mother).

We left Tomorrowland and walked to our last ride of the evening: the Jungle Cruise. Our skipper was full of laughs, and everyone really enjoyed riding past the hippos and seeing the backside of water. It was time for the fireworks, so everyone had a snack of ice cream and churros, then sat and watched the amazing fireworks display.

We left the park at about 10:00pm, and called the day perfect. The kids were asleep within minutes of getting into the car, and we made it back to Oxnard by midnight. It was an absolutely fantastic day!

Santa Barbara Zoo: California Vacation, Day 9

The day was sunny and bright, so we headed up to Santa Barbara with my mom. I love State Street and the ocean front in Santa Barbara - shopping in brilliant sunlight and watching the kite surfers take to the waves. After eating lunch and stopping in at Sur la Table, we went to the zoo.

The animals were really active and the views simply can't be beat. We saw several animals that don't exist in our local zoos (like flamingos) and enjoyed the fresh air.

After the zoo, we stopped by the playground across the street to allow the boys to run off some steam. We wanted to head home before traffic started to pile up on the 101, so we were on our way by 3:30pm.

That night, my grandmother and Aunt L. came over to visit. It was so nice to see them, and the boys were able to see their great grandmother. We actually managed to get a picture of the four generations, which I am grateful for.
