Chautauqua Gorge on the Fourth of July

We love hiking down to Chautauqua Gorge. It is a gorgeous place, though it can get a bit wild after a big rainstorm. It had rained recently, so the waterfalls were quite forceful and we could not hike up the stream. Nolan swam in the main swimming hole, while Matt searched for fossils.

The dog kept as dry as possible, avoiding the water at every possible turn.

We wandered around for a while, until big raindrops started to sprinkle down from the sky.

We headed back up the trail before the skies opened up completely. We didn't want to get caught in a flash flood at the bottom of the gorge! Everyone was happy to get into the warm, dry car.

We promised the boys we'd head back to the gorge on a sunny day!
